FICTION PUBLISHER'S LIST
This resource comes to you courtesy of Ruth Zavitz, who compiled the original list, and Clyo Beck who updated it and added the active links.
(Note: This is a list of publishers mainly for novelists and short story writers. Only publishers who have online sites are included.) Ruth compiled and updated this list for the old LWS website, where it was posted without hyperlinks. When I assumed responsibility for the website, I updated the information about each publisher and formatted each domain name as a hyperlink. I also provided a second link - to the publisher's submission guidelines page - when I found such a page on the publisher's site. Some publishers do not have submission guidelines or requirements online. In these cases, you will have to consult a current issue of Writer's Market, Novel & Short Story Writer's Market, or Writer's and Artist's Yearbook for details. If all else fails, contact the publisher for guidelines. If you want to hire an editor, Preditors & Editors has a page of them (some highly recommended and some to be avoided) plus complaints P & E has received against publishers for a variety of issues including copyright infringement. Explore the site; it holds a treasure trove of valuable information. (If you toggle to the end of the page that comes up from this link you will see a list of links to other sites with useful warnings.) A few publishers recommend specific editors. Lerner, for instance, recommends The Queue to authors who want to be published. (Lerner also recommends joining a critique group.) If you are gearing your book toward a specific publisher, contact that publisher before your final edit and ask for a recommendation. Before querying, acquaint yourself with the type of books published by the house you intend to contact. Make sure your book is a good match. When querying, send exactly what the editor requests, no more, no less. The editor has reasons for the rules and the very best way to get rejected is not to follow the directions. Many of the top publishers will accept only agented submissions but it appears that most (but not all on this list) will consider one-page query letters.
