ABOUT US
Founded in the Spring of 2007 by Cheryl Curtis, who had been part of a similar and successful writers' group in Victoria, B.C., the London Writers' Society became a formal society with a dues-paying membership on September 20, 2007.
Members complete an application form and pay $25 per year to support our activities.
Our activities are coordinated by an executive committee of member-volunteers. We seek to offer information, support, community, and exposure for London, Ontario area writers at all levels of experience through the following:
General Meetings
On the third Thursday of each month and open to the public, our general meeting is a great place to meet other writers who are earnest about honing their prose and being published. As a result, we strive to provide something of real value for those who attend.
Critique Groups
The heart of our society and the reason we originally came together, we will continue to provide face-to-face critique groups for our membership.
Prospective members are welcome to attend our critique groups and check them out. Not a workshop/classroom scenario, but a mutual effort by participants to respect, encourage and constructively critique each other's work, a good critique group is invaluable to those writers who participate in it. Scroll down on our home page for the meeting and contact information for these groups.
Literary Events and Sponsorship
Since September of 2007 successive executive committees have:
- Hosted a variety of authors and guest speakers at our general meetings
- Provided mini-workshops on query writing, flash fiction, and other topics
- Provided the opportunity for writers to read and share what they have written
- Co-sponsored a Romance Writing workshop with the LPL
- Thrown an annual holiday party on the third Thursday in December
London Writers' Society.ca Website
Effective August 1, 2010 the LWS Executive Committee is looking for a new webmaster. Until a new webmaster is found, this site will not be updated. There is, however, a blogspot blog, Our Successes, on which members can encourage other writers by posting news of their writing successes, links to their books and stories, and notices of upcoming booksignings.
If you are a dues-paying member and you would like to be able to post to that blog, please send an email to president(at)londonwriterssociety.ca and request log-in information.
London Writers' Society Newsletter
I edited and published an electronic newsletter in which I reported news and gave updates about LWS meetings (such as time or date changes), LWS member activities, book launches, writing workshops, publishing trends, contests, writing tips, tools, and anything else that struck me as helpful or of interest to London/Middlesex writers like myself.
Unfortunately, I am no longer able to continue producing that publication. So if you are interested and able to help produce an electronic newsletter for LWS, or if you wish to help out with writing and sending out LWS email updates, then please send an email to the current LWS executive at: president(at)londonwriterssociety.ca.
Community
This society's primary goal is to help foster a community rich in friendship, support, and help to the writers of London and Middlesex County so that they might be better able to achieve their long-term goals of producing writing that is read, enjoyed and published.
Thank you for your interest in the London Writers' Society.
May your writing fire burn bright,
